Provera (medroxyprogesterone) is a female hormone. It is used to treat amenorrhea (lack of menstrual flow), abnormal bleeding from the uterus, or endometriosis. Generic Provera is a cost-saving medication prescribed by medical physicians worldwide.
Provera may also be marketed as: Agolutin, Lutren, Medroxyprogesterone, Thiuranide, Utrogestan.
HOW TO TAKE
May be taken with food or immediately after a meal to prevent stomach upset. Take this medication as prescribed. It is usually taken for 5 to 13 days during the later end of the menstrual cycle.
For treatment of cancer, the medication is usually taken more often. Follow the dosing schedule carefully. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
- sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
- chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, fast heart rate;
- pain or swelling in one or both legs;
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
- vaginal bleeding if you have already gone through menopause;
- feeling like you might pass out;
- a breast lump;
- symptoms of depression (sleep problems, dizziness, mood changes, headache);
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
Before you take this medication, tell your doctor your medical history (and family history), including: high blood pressure, seizures, migraine headaches, diabetes, asthma, heart disease or blood vessel problems (e.g., stroke, heart attack), liver or kidney disease, blood clots, history of cancer, high blood level of cholesterol or fats, depression, excessive weight gain or fluid retention during menstrual cycle, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes).
If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk. However, there have been no reports (to date) of problems in nursing infants, breast-feeding while using very high doses of this medication is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Avoid smoking while you are taking this medication. Smoking greatly increases your risk of blood clots.
